What ARE they teaching our children at school?

Pancake recipe

To cook with lard apparently…

Don’t get me wrong, I have an enormous amount of respect for teachers. They do a very difficult and extremely important job with amounts of patience that I can’t even imagine having, but when my 7-year-old brought this recipe home from school I had to wonder.

I’m not too worried about the spelling, small boys are much more concerned with running around in the playground than checking their spelling and I’m sure it will improve over time, but teaching them to cook with lard? For a school which doesn’t allow you to send in a chocolate bar in your child’s packed lunch because of their ‘healthy-eating policy’ it seems strange to encourage them to fry pancakes in lard, something which I don’t think has really been used outside of pastry-making since the 1940s. Am I completely mistaken?

Perhaps I am. Either way this recipe is still stuck to my kitchen wall with pride. And if you’d like a slightly better pancake recipe (minus the lard) you might want to check out my multi-function breakfast pancakes.

I think the picture drawn at the bottom is a giant knife next to a small plate containing tiny pancakes, but it could be a snail. I didn’t like to ask, I’m his mum so I thought it was lovely either way…
